The difference in account types
Bytebaq is available in several versions for different types of computers. The simplest service is Bytebaq PC Edition. It is not available in a server version. This service can only be monitored from the computer doing the backups. Multiple data sets and delivery of backups on disk is not supported. Bytebaq Professional is a slightly more expensive service with more functionality and recovery options. It would be an appropriate choice for business backup as multiple accounts can be managed from a web based control panel. Quick recovery of an entire data set can be requested for delivery by DVD or encrypted disk. Email sales at bytebaq dot comfor prices and to order this service.

Does Bytebaq keep more than one copy of changing files?
Bytebaq will retain up to 3 copies of any file that change. This will allow you to restore an earlier version of a file if the current version is corrupt or incorrect.

Is my data safe while being transmitted over the Internet?
Data is encrypted before transmission to the data centre, where it is stored in the encrypted format. It is only unencrypted after it has been restored to your computer.

What kind of encryption security does Bytebaq use?
Bytebaq uses AES encryption technology for data security. This encryption standard has been approved for internal use by the US federal government. It is fast, efficient and carries 256-bit security. To put this in perspective, credit card and bank transactions are carried out over the Internet at 128-bit encryption.

Backing up data

Can I backup more than one computer into a Bytebaq account?
You can only backup data from one computer into a Bytebaq account. Attempting to backup more than one computer into a single Bytebaq account is a breach of the Fair Use policy and your account will be terminated. It also will corrupt the backup process as Bytebaq stores not only your files but where they exist on your computer.

How do I setup my backup?
Bytebaq PC Edition will automatically backup all the data on your computer without any setup. However, it is possible for all Bytebaq services to select folders for transmission to the vault. To learn more, download the Bytebaq PC Edition Quick Start Guide or the Bytebaq Professional Quick Start guide.

Are there limitations to how much data I can backup to the Bytebaq vault?
There is no limitation. However, if you have a great deal of data and a relatively slow internet connection, this can take time. After it has backed up everything on your computer, Bytebaq will only backup those files that are new or have changed, making subsequent backups happen much faster than the initial one.

When does Bytebaq perform a backup?
The default setting is for Bytebaq to trickle data to the vault all the time your computer is online. However, if you are using your connection to stream media or to power a VOiP telephone system you may want to structure your backups to happen only at night, or if they take place during the day, at a slower speed. The Quick Start Guide shows you how to set up bandwidth profiling.

Can I change how fast Bytebaq backs up to the vault?
The service default is to use a speed of 50 kbs (kilobits per second) of bandwidth to backup data. You can change the speed of your backups hour by hour, by selecting “Modify Backup Times” from the ‘Options’ menu. Remember to select “Save Changes” from the File menu before closing the “Modify Backup Times” window.

What happens if my Internet connection goes down in the middle of a backup?
It is no problem if you close the Internet connection or If the connection lapses during a backup. Bytebaq will wait until the connection is restored and complete the transmission of the file it has been working on. It will then verify that the backup for that file has completed successfully before going on to the next file.

Is it possible to schedule backups?
Yes. You can schedule backups to take place around the clock or only during specific times of day. This is done by selection “Modify Backup Times” from the Options menu. Select the times during the day when you want the file transmission speed to be zero, then selecting “Save Changes” from the File menu.

How do I tell the progress of my backup?
At any time you can check the progress of a backup by opening the backup window by clicking on the Bytebaq icon in your system tray. The backup log gives a clear indication of how far Bytebaq has gotten in scanning your disk and backing it up.

Every time a scan of your whole disk and backup is completed, the Bytebaq icon in the system tray will turn green.
Here are the details that correspond to the changing colour of the Bytebaq icon.

What do I do if Bytebaq is not backing up?
Step 1: Check your Internet connection.
Step 2: If the Internet is working, check the setting on your firewall or call your ISP to make sure service is being provided in your area.
Step 3: If the Internet is working and your firewall is setup properly, make sure your Bytebaq account is setup correctly.
Step 4: If everything else appears to be working normally please email . Include your account name and as much information as you can about what you have already checked on your computer.

Will Bytebaq backup .pst files?
Yes. Bytebaq will backup .pst files, but only if the Outlook window is closed. It is recommended that you use Bytebaq Professional to backup .pst files. Create a separate backup set with only the .pst file in it. Set the bandwidth profile to start the backup after you have closed the Outlook window. You can have other bandwidth profiles performing backups at the same time.

Are there any files Bytebaq will not backup?
Bytebaq is a data backup service. If you need to backup system files we suggest looking at the other DataFort backup services.
Also, while Bytebaq has no internal limitations on file sizes it can backup, unless you have a very stable Internet connection you may start to experience problems backing up files over 2 gigabytes in size. The Bytebaq software will inform you if it has had trouble backing up a file.

There are also file types not normally associated with informational data. A list of file types that are excluded from the Bytebaq vault can be found at www.bytebaq.com/type.htm.
